PROFESSIONAL PROFILE
    Dr. Genn is an award winning Board Certified Gastroenterologist specializing in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease and disorders of the digestive tract. He has extensive experience treating patients with reflux disease (“GERD”), irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, including Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's disease, celiac disease or gluten allergy, colon cancer and other cancers of the GI tract.

    Dr. Genn has over twenty years of experience performing endoscopy including colonoscopy, polyp removal and upper endoscopy (“EGD”). He has experience in Pill Cam SB Capsule Endoscopy, physiological ambulatory pH testing for GERD and Infrared coagulation of hemorrhoids. He also specializes in disease of the liver including cirrhosis, hepatitis and pancreatic diseases.

    Dr. Genn has been in practice as an Attending Gastroenterologist at Hudson Valley Hospital Center since 1993. He is a graduate of Boston University's Accelerated Six Year BA/MD Program, where he received both his BA and MD degrees in 1988. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Montefiore Medical Center in 1991 and he completed his Gastroenterology Fellowship at New York Medical College at Westchester County Medical Center in 1993.

    Dr. Genn has received many honors and recognitions, including being listed as Castle Connelly's Top Doctor in the New York Metro Area for fifteen years with the most recent award being given in 2014. He was also named by Consumer Research Counsel as America's Top Gastroenterologist of 2011 and 2012 and he has been awarded Hudson Valley Hospital Center's Physician of the Quarter.

    Dr. Genn is fluent in both English and Spanish.

Dr. Genn focuses his practice on all adults over the age of eighteen; however, Dr. Genn understands and recognizes the unique needs of different subsets within this larger adult patient population. Thus Dr. Genn provides individualized care to all patients with an extensive mastery for the distinct needs of elderly and geriatric patients as well as Veterans.

Dr. Genn also understands the unique needs of non-native English speaking patients. Dr. Genn has successfully served many patients within the local Spanish speaking community with his ability to provide a bi-lingual medical experience. Dr. Genn is able to discuss and explain diseases, procedures and diagnostic testing in Spanish plus provide educational literature in Spanish for his patients.

    Dr. Genn is an experienced and knowledgeable medical professional who has completed extensive training and education within the medical sub-specialty of Gastroenterology.

    Dr. Genn has been in private practice as a Board Certified Gastroenterologist for over twenty years. Throughout his twenty plus year career, Dr. Genn has performed more than 10,000 colonoscopies and over 10,000 upper endoscopies for diagnostic and treatment purposes.

    Dr. Genn's expertise has been recognized and celebrated as he has received many honors and recognitions, including being listed as Castle Connelly's Top Doctors in the New York Metro Area for fifteen years; with the most recent award being given in 2014. Dr. Genn was also named by Consumer Research Counsel as America's Top Gastroenterologist of 2011 and 2012 and he has been awarded Hudson Valley Hospital Center's Physician of the Quarter.

    In addition to his private practice, Dr. Genn established and managed a GI Clinic for United States Veterans at New York State Veterans' Home in Montrose, NY. Dr. Genn also provides care for mentally-ill and developmentally disabled people in local group homes throughout Westchester County. Aside from serving his local community, Dr. Genn takes pride in remaining current with the latest medical literature, advances in medicine and changes in medical technology all of which Dr. Genn shares with his patients.

    Prior to entering private practice, Dr. Genn completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY and then undertook an intensive Gastroenterology Fellowship at New York Medical College at Westchester County Medical Center. During this Fellowship, Dr. Genn simultaneously took call for GI emergencies for three teaching hospitals: Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla, NY, Metropolitan Hospital in East Harlem, NY and Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx, NY where he performed over 1,500 EGDs and colonoscopies of which many involved patients who required urgent and emergent intervention.

    Dr. Genn looks forward to further sharing his expertise by continuing to serve patients throughout the Hudson Valley.

Dr. Genn is a Board Certified Gastroenterologist who specializes in the practice of Gastroenterology. Gastroenterology is the diagnosis, surveillance and treatment of symptoms, ailments and diseases of the digestive tract and the liver.

Dr. Genn offers general Gastroenterology procedures such as Colonoscopy and Endoscopy, as well as a broad range of specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Some of the specialized offerings of Dr. Genn include Capsule Endoscopy, Bravo pH monitoring for testing Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (“GERD”), non-surgical Hemorrhoid treatments, as well as many others. Over the course of his twenty plus year career, Dr. Genn has performed more than 20,000 procedures in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.

Colonoscopy for colon cancer screening, including the removal of precancerous polyps, is one of Dr. Genn's principal areas of expertise. Colon cancer screening is the primary reason the incidence of colon cancer and death due to colon cancer has decreased substantially over the past two decades. This screening allows cancer to be detected in its earliest stages, which substantially improves prognosis and likelihood of survival.

Dr. Genn has core competencies with Esophagogastroduodenoscopy better known as Upper Endoscopy or EGD. EGD is used to diagnose a host of conditions including GERD, cancers, ulcers and inflammation of the upper GI tract. Dr. Genn is equally skilled at gastric feeding tube placement via endoscopy which is known as Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy tube placement or PEG.

In addition to Colonoscopy and Endoscopy procedures, Dr. Genn has extensive experience in treating actively bleeding ulcers by using cautery, epinephrine injection and hemoclip techniques. Another area of core specialization is Dr. Genn's ability to perform both emergent and elective banding of esophageal varices in patients with cirrhosis. He also has substantial experience in the dilation of strictures of the esophagus, stomach and sigmoid colon.

Dr. Genn also performs internal hemorrhoid treatments with infrared coagulation. Plus, Dr. Genn is experienced in the use of Argon Plasma Coagulation to cauterize bleeding lesions in the stomach and duodenum as well as the colon.

Dr. Genn performs all of these procedures using state of the art equipment in Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (“JCAHO”) approved facilities.

Overall, Dr. Genn is committed to providing each patient he treats with ongoing quality care. In order to ensure this commitment, Dr. Genn registered with and participated in the GI Quality Improvement Consortium (“GIQuIC”). As a participant in the GIQuIC, Dr. Genn performed ongoing, peer-based performance evaluations in which he sought quality improvements on a daily basis for his practice and for the outcomes of his patients.

Dr. Genn's commitment to quality and his leadership were recognized by his peers as Dr. Genn was appointed and served as President of a state of the art Ambulatory Surgical Center in the Hudson Valley. Dr. Genn's expertise and his thorough understanding of how Gastroenterology relates to other organ systems has resulted in Dr. Genn serving as an integral part of many inpatient care teams which often include other physicians such as internists, surgeons, ER and ICU intensivists.
